I remember we actually stumbled upon Sperlonga accidentally. We had gotten off at the wrong stop on our way from Rome to Naples and that’s when we saw the gorgeous city and the breathtaking views.
We, unfortunately, couldn’t make it on that same trip. Still, the following year I made sure to pencil in Sperlonga into our itinerary because I was awestruck with the beauty of the small Italian beach town.
So, who better to write about this lovely city than two tourists who stumbled upon it by accident and fell in love? We’ll uncover the best things to do in Sperlonga and some helpful tips for your Italian beach day!
When Is The Best Time To Visit Sperlonga?
To enjoy the best that Sperlonga offers, you’ll want to plan your visit either during the spring time so April to June or fall time so September to October. We stress visiting during this time because not only is weather still warm and sunny but the town is also less crowded. Less crowds means you get to immerse yourself in Sperlonga without all the hassle of crowds and long waits.
Although, if you love peak tourist seasons and love lively atmospheres and need the hot weather, then visiting during the summer months of July and August is perfect for you.
How To Get To Sperlonga From Rome or Naples
The great part about Sperlonga is it’s conveniently located near Rome and Naples, making it an easy day trip from Rome or a day trip from Naples. If you’re in Rome you’ll want to head to the Roma Termini, then hop on a direct train to Monte san biagio station. Then take a bus to Terracina, once at Terracina hop on a bus to Sperlonga. Once you arrive at the Sperlonga station drop off, you can then walk the rest of the way, it should take no more then ten minutes.
If you have the time and means, renting a private car to make the trip offers the most flexibility and comes with an epic scenic drive along the breathtaking coast.
If you’re heading from Naples, the trip will take around 2 hours and 40 minutes each way. To start, head to Napoli Centrale Station and hop on a train to Gaeta. From there you’ll transfer to a bus that takes you straight to Sperlonga.
Getting Around Sperlonga
Sperlonga is a small town that beckons you to explore its treasures on foot. As you wander through the narrow streets of the historic center, you’ll find that most attractions, restaurants, and beaches are within easy walking distance. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, renting a bicycle adds more fun to your adventures.

For a relaxing Beach Day!
Sperlonga beaches are absolutely gorgeous; we loved spending the day out lounging on beach chairs and feeling the warmth of the sun and the soft sand beneath our toes. Then taking a dip in the sea every few hours to cool down. It’s such a serene environment, and when we went in September, it was just the perfect amount of crowds.
Just remember to pack your essentials – a sun hat, sunscreen, a comfortable beach towel, and your favorite swimsuit.
Sperlonga Local Cuisine is Beyond Delicious!
Sperlonga is heaven for foodies! The town is renowned for its fresh seafood entrees, yummy pasta dishes, and excellent Aperitivo menus. Don’t forget to try the Seppie con Carciofi if you’re a fan of seafood; this local specialty is beyond delicious, with its main stars being Cuttlefish and Artichokes perfectly baked to create a harmonious meal. Don’t get us started on the desserts! They have yummy gelato, tiramisu, raspberry custards, and wayyy more!

Visiting Sperlonga Historical Sites -Villa of Tiberius
Head out to explore the captivating historical sites of Sperlonga. Trek through the Grotto of Tiberius, which is an underground cave with stunning serene water views. The heavy influence of the Roman era is easily recognizable in this historical place so make sure to take the time to marvel at the intricate details of this hidden cove.
Relax on the Beaches:
Settle into the soft sands, soak up the sun, and surrender to the tranquility of Sperlonga breathtaking beaches. Whether you seek a peaceful escape or a refreshing dip in the azure waters, the beaches of Sperlonga offer a haven of relaxation and natural beauty.
Explore Sperlonga Old Town:
Lose yourself in the enchanting streets of the Sperlonga historic center. Wander through the charming whitewashed houses and discover hidden street corners and quaint alleyways. Don’t forget to walk by the beautiful Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria, an architectural gem that adds to the town’s allure and provides a glimpse into its rich cultural heritage. Actually, have fun in the sea but partaking in water sports. You can go Snorkelling through the vibrant sea. Try paddleboarding, the water is super pretty so this a popular activity. Floating on a floaty is popular too, I mean why wouldn’t it be lol. You can also rent a boat to explore the nearby islands and hidden coves, plus get unforgettable views of Sperlonga.

Hike to Torre Truglia:
Go on a scenic hiking adventure to Torre Truglia. As you make the climb the stunning views of Sperlonga and the sea are just amazing from this high up. You know you arrived when you see the the historic watchtower, from the very top of the cliff where the watchtower is located.
You’ll be rewarded for your journey with amazing panoramic views of Sperlonga and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s a perfect spot to capture instagram worthy photos and see a view of sperlonga that most tourist don’t know about!
Indulge in Local Gastronomy
Sperlonga is a culinary haven that promises to delight your taste buds. Immerse yourself in the flavors of the sea as you savor the freshest seafood dishes prepared with love and expertise.
